Holehan’s UI Reviews

WORK IN PROGRESS

Okular features a selection of tools which enables the user to browse, zoom, annotate and select from the displayed document.

Current Tools Menu:

Revamped Tools Menu:

	( ) Browse Tool
	( ) (Zoom Tool)
	( ) Selection Tool
	( ) Annotation Tool
	Selection →

		Region
	Annotation →
		Note
		Free Text
		Pencil Lines
		Marker Lines
		Straight Lines
		Oval
		Highlight
		Underline

Note: Only show the Annotation Toolbar if we are in Annotation Tool mode.

For the tools part of the toolbar this means:

- In case KDE4 gets grouped toolbars: (Browse Icon)(Zoom Icon)(Select Icon*)(Annotation Icon) Toolbar text for this group: Tool Mode

- otherwise (more likely I guess): (Browse Icon)(Zoom Icon)(Select Icon*)(Annotation Icon) Toolbar text (taking into account the “text under icons” default from kde4: Browse | Zoom | Select | Annotate

  • Note: the select action sports a drop-down that lets you choose between text or region selection

Browse

Zoom

Selections

Merge the text selection and the region selection. Separately offer the choice between the text selection and the region selection tool. Make text selection the default one since it is more commonly used. Reflect this behaviour in the toolbar.

Annotations

Okular features a new annotation tool that needs to be integrated into the tool set.

The annotations feature limit annotation actions to ones that only differ in functionality. Instead of showing various thin highlighters with different colors let the user change the color of the pen.
