Holehan’s UI Reviews

The drop target offers a quick way to drag and drop links which are then automatically downloaded with KGet.

1. Very Good

Cursor Feedback: The cursor changes to a plus sign when dragging a url over the target. Dragging files from unsupported protocols could be marked with an appropriate sign as well.

The location of the drop target is stressed by an animation.

Dropping a link on the drop target is confirmed with an animation similar to a head nodding. That’s great!

2. Not So Good

2.1 Main application shows up when drop target is started from Konqueror (solved)

Severity: low

Activating the drop target from within Konqueror makes the whole kget main window appear. This is unnecessary and could distract since the links could also be dropped on the main window.

Suggestion: When “Show drop target” is triggered in Konqueror show drop target only and hide the main application window.

2.2 Offer more ways to activate drop target

Severity: medium

Within the kget application the drop target can only be activated via the settings dialog.

Suggestion: Make access to drop target easier and possible through the menu, not only via the settings.

Status: Drop Target is now accessible through the systray pop up menu :) However even better would be an additional menu entry under “Settings”. This would entirely remove the necessity of the reminder window that appears when the drop target is hidden from its own pop up menu.

Drop target’s context menu:

2.3 ”Hide me” to hide drop target is ambiguous (solved)

Severity: low

Make clear what will be hidden

Suggestion: Rename “Hide me” to “Hide drop target”.

2.4 KGet’s ctrl+q shortcut not applicable for drop target

Severity: low

Keyboard shortcut “ctrl+Q” for Quit only works when KGet has focus, not when drop target has (had) focus.

Suggestion: no solution yet, the issue is more complicated than it looks.

2.5 Quit in drop target context menu is ambiguous (solved)

Severity: low

Make it clear that the application is quit and not the drop target

Suggestion: possibly rename “Quit” to “Quit KGet”.

2.6 Pop up for duplicate downloads unnecessary

Severity: low

When a download is added that is already in the list a pop up warning appears that users have to dismiss. This is a non destructive situation and doesn’t warrant the breaking of a user’s work flow. It doesn’t require any action and thus attention by the user.

Suggestion: Simply ignore a duplicate download from the same location.
